Silent Running

I’ve been experimenting with writing poetry. This one is based on one of my favourite science fiction films.

You're never as alone as you are in space
Adrift in a sea of eternal silence
Star-spangled ebony stretches to infinity
The ship's cargo more precious than any treasure
The womb in which we grew, our pre-human family
A sampling of the forests, the lakes, the seas and the ice
The creatures that crawl, hop, climb and swim
EarthPlus™ needs but people and circuits now
The order came to burn Mother Nature like a witch
Destroy the ship and return to Earth
Some orders are made for defiance
It's just me and the robots now
On a journey to nowhere and forever

  1. Lisa says:

Just saw. This is great, and pretty prescient over here since we don’t know if it’s the Commies or UFOs invading.

  2. I’m glad you liked it, Lisa.

Might be a bit confusing if you haven’t seen the film. The ship is from Earth and is carrying what is left of nature. It’s kind a greenie hippy sci-fi movie, complete with songs by Joan Baez.
